             A. G . Gardiner was  an English Journalist , Editor and Author . He wrote his essay under the title "Alpha Of The Plough" .He is one of the most lovable and delightful writer of the periodical essay .

 About The Essay " Rules On The Road " 

               The Rule of The Road was written by A.G . Gardiner . In this essay ; he describes his observation and thought on what liberty in reality is ! . He also describes the difference between individual liberty and social liberty 

                     According to him ; 

" liberty is not personal affair ; but a social affair " 

                Gardiner essays are natural , easy and light . His essay remind us of laughter , sunshine , peace and other such pleasant things . He also used his pen name in his work .

 1)  The Old Lady With Basket...

            An old lady was walking with her basket in the middle of a street in the pavement . Pavement was the place for foot passengers . 

            She replied ; 

              " I am going to walk where I like " 

                We have got liberty now " 

            If we preserve her liberty ; it curtailed other's liberty . It becomes social anarchy . 

2) Liberty is not a personal affair , but a social affair .....

              By this point , The author wants to say ,

   He has the liberties ...like 

•   Having Long Hair ; 
•   Walking with bare foot 
•   Dyeing one's Hair
•  Going to bed early ; 
•  Getting Up late . 

          This is our personal liberty but if it disturb other's liberty than it becomes social liberty . 

3) Description Of Kingdom ...

           There was the story of Kingdom. In which we rule alone . We do everything .

 

    " Be Wise , Harsh , Easy , Conventional , Odd " 

        

         But  if we step out of that kingdom, our personal liberty of action can be curtailed . It disturbs other people's liberty too ! 

4) Difference between "Individual liberty Vs Social liberty : 

           In this essay individual liberty presented by old lady . She was walking in the middle of the road. She was enjoying her liberty but it doesn't mean that anyone should break the rule of the road  .

               " we have individual liberty to do what we like ; While other people also have the liberty to laugh at them " 

     

            While a person who is wearing a tall hat or funny clothes also have the liberty to ignore those people . 

5) Journey Of Railway Carriage ...

          The author was enjoying his railway journey . He wanted to read a book but one traveller began to talk loudly . The author was unable to focus on the book . The author could not ask them to speak in a low voice because it is social liberty to speak in public place .

6) Description Of Playing Gramophone ...

           Some notorious deleberately use the loud horn on the road . No one has any right to stop them . It is not civilized way . There was a description of Gramophone . 

             " One Person is playing gramophone loudly .  He is enjoying his liberty too ! .

  

           But it disturbs all surrounding people then it becomes social affair.  

  

Theme ...

 

              In this essay the author describes the liberty as the central idea . He founded liberty as a key elements in our day-to-day life . " Every person has its own liberty " but it doesn't mean that we misused this right .This is the central idea in this essay . 

To Sum Up ...

      " The world is complex we should balance between individual liberty and social liberty . " 

               The rule of the road is an example of this type of liberty .
